Q+A with the lifestyle brand's founder

We joined forces with Petunia Pickle Bottom to create a collection of luxurious silky soft swaddles featuring the brand’s vibrant, playful prints. Here, our friend DeNai Jones, founder and designer of Petunia Pickle Bottom, shares the story behind her company’s unique name, her inspiration for this exciting collaboration and more.

Q: We’re dying to know, where did you come up with the name Petunia Pickle Bottom?

A: This is one of the questions I get asked the most, and one I never tire of answering. My dad made up a rhyme when I was a little girl and he would sing it to me: “Petunia pickle bottom Hortense horse-feathers willamina birdbath.” When I designed the first product (a version of the popular Boxy Backpack), it got so much positive feedback from those around me. I knew I was going to start a business, and the question of what to call it weighed on me. I wanted to get it right. I wanted it to have meaning. That’s when it hit me to take the first 3 words of that sentimental rhyme from my childhood.

Q: How did the collaboration with aden + anais come about?

A: I first spotted Raegan and her muslin blankets over 10 years ago at a tiny tradeshow in NYC. I immediately loved her swaddles’ stunning simplicity, and I also felt an instant connection to Raegan. She spent a few minutes sharing the details of her products with me—the versatility and breathability of muslin blankets over traditional blankets of that time—and I remember whispering into my business partner’s ear as we walked away “She’s going to do great.” And she truly has. Since then, we’ve become friends and have grown our businesses alongside one another. I’ve always admired Raegan for creating a truly unique product she passionately stands behind. Those are the qualities Petunia Pickle Bottom stands for and just one of the reasons we wanted to work with aden + anais.

Q: How would you define your design aesthetic?

A: It’s always been a little hard for me to describe my design aesthetic in words. It just feels like a part of who I am, a part of how I interpret things I see in everyday life from patterns to shapes to color. If I had to pick a word, I think it would be eclectic. I love to mix old with new, modern with traditional. I’ve always loved anything vintage, so a lot of our textile designs and bag shapes are inspired from things I have come across at a flea market or on a trip abroad. I am also really inspired by architecture, geometric tiles, mosaics and colors in nature.

Q: Your bold graphic prints have become your signature, and the nine you designed for this collaboration are no exception. What was your inspiration?

A: This collection is a blend of modern geometric shapes with a hint of worldly, vintage charm. I love the neutral palette in Sienna Siesta, and I also think it’s so exciting to see sophisticated colors, like black, enter the baby industry. The patterns are a modern play on the architecture found in the Siena area of Spain, though we did spell the name like the color, as a play on words. The Sleepy Seychelles collection embodies the beautiful blue hues found in the tranquil waters of the Seychelles, and the mosaic tile prints paired with it have become part of our signature style. The Tuscan Twilight set is a delightful interpretation of the beauty of Tuscany—colorful rolling hills, the numerous rivers and warm evenings in the summer. It is a real thrill to see aden + anais silky soft swaddles adorned in our iconic Petunia Pickle Bottom prints. It seems like the perfect pairing.
